WHY Football & Mentorship?

In a region shaped by conflict, poverty, and inequality — we chose football and mentorship not by accident, but because nothing else reaches young people the same way.

Why Football and Mentorship

Using football & mentorship to change lives in eastern DRC

Part One

Why Football?

Football is not decoration. It is the engine. It is why young people show up, stay engaged, and open themselves to change.

Football

A Universal Language

Football breaks every barrier — language, tribe, gender, and background. On the pitch in eastern DRC, a girl from a displaced family and a boy from the host community play side by side. The game creates a shared space where differences dissolve and trust begins.

Part Two

Why Mentorship?

Football gets young people through the door. Mentorship is what transforms the experience into lasting change.

Relationships Change Lives

Skills fade. Programs end. But a relationship with a trusted adult stays with a young person forever. A mentor is not a teacher or a coach — they are someone who sees a young person fully and believes in them unconditionally. In eastern DRC, many children have never experienced that.

The Impact

Six reasons it works

Football and mentorship are not just tools — they are the most effective combination we have found for creating lasting change in the lives of young people in eastern DRC.

Gender Equality

Girls who play sport are more likely to stay in school, delay marriage, and stand up against abuse. We deliberately design mixed and girls-only spaces to challenge the norm.

📚

Education

Football sessions double as learning moments. We embed literacy, numeracy, and life skills directly into our programs — because education happens everywhere, not just in classrooms.

🌿

Wellbeing

Physical activity, peer connection, and mentorship together create the conditions for genuine wellbeing — not as a side effect, but as a primary goal.

💙

Health Awareness

From HIV prevention to menstrual health to nutrition — our programs use football as the hook and mentorship as the vehicle for critical health knowledge.

🕊️

Conflict Recovery

Eastern DRC has known decades of armed conflict. Football and mentorship offer a path back to normalcy, community trust, and hope — for both individuals and communities.

🤝

Community Cohesion

When displaced and host communities play together, barriers break. Our tournaments are deliberately designed to bring divided communities onto the same pitch, building peace from the ground up.

Now you know the why.

The question now is: what will you do with it? Join us — as a volunteer, donor, mentor, or partner.
